Choosing the right PA program comes down to a few key checks and a gut feeling. Confirm the program is accredited, look at PANCE pass rates, weigh location seriously, research the program's emphasis like research or public health, and only apply where you are genuinely excited to go. When a program is the right fit, you tend to know it.
First, congratulations on deciding to pursue becoming a PA! It is a growing field that comes with a great deal of satisfaction, so you deserve some recognition for the choice. After you work your way through healthcare hours, a personal essay, and what feels like a small library of interview advice, you may hit a new question: how do I actually pick a school, and what if I choose the wrong one?
I was in your shoes once with the same worries, because the program you choose helps shape your career as a PA. So stress no more. Here are my top tips for picking a PA program that is right for you, starting with the non negotiables and ending with the part only you can judge.
Two factors are essential to check up front:
- Accreditation: PA programs go through a national review to make sure their curriculum and faculty meet certain standards. This matters a lot, because if a program is not accredited you will not be able to attend until it is. ARC-PA.org has an extensive list of accredited programs and when each is next up for review. It is a simple check, but an important one.
- PANCE pass rates: you will work incredibly hard no matter where you go, so make sure the curriculum prepares you well for the PANCE. The closer a program's pass rate is to 100 percent, the better.
These two checks protect your time and money before you fall in love with anything else about a program.
As Jourdyn from The PA Life shares in this guest post, the right program is the one that sparks genuine excitement, not just the one that says yes first. In our coaching at The PA Platform, we echo this: do the hard data checks on accreditation and PANCE rates, then let fit and gut feeling guide the final call.
Beyond the basics, fit is everything:
- Location: programs sit everywhere from big cities to small rural mountain towns and on or off undergraduate campuses. By the time you apply, you usually know what setting suits you. Even a 15 minute traffic delay can wear on you after a long day, so factor location into your choice rather than assuming you can just fight through it.
- Program emphasis: some programs love volunteering, others focus on research or public health, and some offer global trips or non profit clinics. These details help you connect with a program and make for a richer experience.
- Passion and fit: do not apply to programs that are not right for you. Remember that interviews go both ways, so ask the panel questions about anatomy lab, study space, tutoring, and remediation. Out of all my tips, the most important is to trust your gut and your heart. When you find the right program, you will know it.
Accreditation is a pass or fail filter: if a program is not accredited, you cannot attend it until it is, so confirm status on ARC-PA.org before you apply [VERIFY].

Look the program up on ARC-PA.org, which maintains a list of accredited programs and their next review dates [VERIFY]. Accreditation is essential, since you cannot attend an unaccredited program until it earns accreditation.
The closer a program's PANCE pass rate is to 100 percent, the better, since it reflects how well the curriculum prepares students for the certification exam.
More than people expect. The setting shapes your daily stress and quality of life over 2 to 3 years, so choose a location you can actually enjoy rather than just tolerate.
Yes. Programs differ in emphasis, from research to public health to global health trips and non profit clinics, and matching that to your interests makes for a better experience.
Ask about the anatomy lab, study and library access, tutoring, and remediation options. Interviews go both ways, so use them to judge fit.
Do the objective checks first, then trust your gut. When a program genuinely excites you and meets your needs, you will usually feel that it is the right one.
Picking a PA program is a big decision, but a little research turns it from overwhelming into clear: verify accreditation, check PANCE rates, weigh location and focus, and trust your instincts.
