The most recent years of my life have been spent fascinated by medicine, and I have chosen to exercise that fascination and spend my career fostering patient-provider relationships. This, I know, is how I will make a difference in my community.
As I reflect on my life’s journey thus far, no single moment initially led me to this profession. My mother is a radiology technician, and she has worked as a practice manager in orthopedics for our local health system for as long as I can remember. I grew up going to her offices and meeting the staff there, including the PAs. I also spent a significant amount of time at the ENT growing up, and my provider happened to be a PA. I always felt comfortable and heard during my visits. My family has since fully trusted our care, and the care of our community, to the hands of a PA. I have observed that PAs practice in a way that often exceeds the expectations of their patients. They go the extra mile to educate and consistently advocate for their patients, showing them endless care and compassion. I knew from a young age I wanted a career in medicine, and after watching and learning from a distance, I knew the PA profession was for me.
As years passed, I began to consider my future and the dream of becoming a PA. Despite my end goal when I entered college, I lacked vision. I initially found myself unsure of a career in medicine and was discouraged by a difficult first semester. Then I began to realize that everything I was working toward required me to visualize where I was headed, and I knew what I needed: motivation—and with that motivation came persistence, and my drive to become a physician assistant. I am thankful for the experiences that have taught me to appreciate the confidence that I have in my path.
