Total HCE hours: I had nearly 1000 HCE hours at the time of submitting my application the second time applying. I worked as a medical scribe with Proscribe obtaining my hours in family medicine, pulmonology, emergency medicine, and allergy/immunology.
Shadowing hours: I had nearly 100 shadowing hours in Orthopedics, Gastroenterology, and Family Medicine.
Volunteer hours: I had 170 volunteer hours working with Let My People Go in NYC on a Global Outreach trip through OBU.

Why PA? I chose to become a PA because I fell in love with the career. I loved the idea of patient care that focuses on forming true connections with patients and values good patient outcomes. I came from a very rural area in Oklahoma where access to medical care was severely lacking. I saw the PA profession as an opportunity to fill the gaps that are missing in the states healthcare system.
How many programs did you apply to? I applied to the same 3 programs each time I applied, all within my home state of Oklahoma.
How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? I was very blessed to have interviewed with all 3 programs I applied to. My second time applying I received an acceptance to ALL 3 programs!
Where will you be attending? I will be attending the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine Physician Assistant program in Tulsa Oklahoma.
Anything you found interesting about interviews? I was surprised at how well the conversations flowed the second time around. I can remember being very nervous my first time interviewing, the set up being on zoom didn’t ease my nerves. This time, two of my interviews were in person and only one was over zoom. I felt incredibly confident in person and they made me feel very comfortable and encouraged through the process!!
Were there any helpful resources (books, websites, webinars, etc) you used to get through prerequisites courses, the application or interview process? Something that I believe helped me through undergrad is that I knew very early on I wanted to pursue PA as a career path. This opened the conversation with my advisors to plan which classes I needed to take to ensure completion of prerequisites. Not only that, but they encouraged me through the process and helped me decide which HCE I could do that would suit me best. To help me prepare for interviews, I used Savannah Perry’s book titled Physician Assistant School Interview Guide. This was incredibly helpful as it challenged me to really think through some commonly asked questions ahead of time so I wouldn’t be taken off guard. It was also a very encouraging book!
Any advice for other pre-PA students? My advice to current pre-PA students is just keep chipping away at it. You WILL become a PA one day. You WILL reach this dream. You owe it to yourself and your future patients to keep working hard!
