Your CASPA GPA is not your transcript GPA.

CASPA recalculates every applicant’s coursework on one standardized scale so programs can compare people fairly. That recalculation is usually the reason the number on your CASPA application is different, sometimes lower, than the number on your school’s transcript.

  • Every attempt counts. If you retook a class, CASPA counts both grades. There is no grade replacement and no forgiveness policy, even if your school removed the original grade from your transcript.
  • Plus and minus grades matter. An A− is 3.7 and a B+ is 3.3. Schools that report a flat 4.0 for any A will produce a higher transcript GPA than CASPA will.
  • An A+ is still a 4.0. CASPA caps grade points at 4.0, so an A+ cannot pull your GPA above a 4.0 the way it can at some schools.
  • Pass, credit, and withdrawal carry no grade points. Those credits appear on your application but are left out of the GPA calculation entirely.
  • Quarter credits are converted. If your school runs on quarters, CASPA converts quarter hours to semester hours before calculating, which shifts the weighting between your classes.

What actually counts as a BCP science course.
Most programs weigh your science GPA at least as heavily as your cumulative one, and it is the number applicants most often get wrong. BCP stands for biology, chemistry, and physics: the three subject families CASPA groups into the science GPA.
Usually Counts....

  • General and upper-level biology, microbiology, genetics, cell biology

  • Anatomy, physiology, and combined A&P courses

  • General and organic chemistry, biochemistry

Usually Does Not Count.....

  • Math and statistics: counted separately, not in BCP

  • Psychology and sociology, even when a program requires them

  • Medical terminology and clinical skills courses

CASPA assigns each course a subject code based on its content, not its department, so a course cross-listed in a health-sciences department can still count as biology. Why is my CASPA GPA lower than my transcript GPA?

Usually because CASPA counts every attempt at a repeated course, uses plus and minus grade points, and caps an A+ at 4.0. Schools that forgive retakes or report flat letter grades will show you a higher number than CASPA will.

Does CASPA replace a retaken grade?

No. Both the original grade and the retake are included in your GPA. This is the single biggest difference between CASPA and most university policies.

Do pass/fail classes hurt my GPA?

They do not affect it either way, because they carry no grade points. They still count toward your credit totals and toward prerequisite requirements at most programs.

Which GPA do PA programs care about most?

Most publish a minimum for both cumulative and science GPA, and many weigh the science GPA more heavily. A number of programs also look specifically at your last 30 to 60 graded credits.

Can I still get in with a GPA below 3.0?

People do every cycle, but it takes a deliberate plan: targeted retakes, strong recent coursework, and a school list built around programs that will actually consider you. That is exactly what a Low GPA Repair session is for.
