Who is Kena and what is her PA school connection?

On this episode of the podcast I am not talking to a PA or a PA student. I am talking to a spouse. If you remember Sean from an earlier episode, he was a nontraditional applicant who left his job as a teacher and coach to pursue PA school. This time I had the chance to sit down with his wife, Kena, to hear what the journey looked like from her side.

Kena is upbeat, positive, and has a great perspective on what it means to be the partner of someone chasing this career. Her family moved from Texas to North Carolina with two children so Sean could start his program. That kind of move is a huge deal, and it touches every part of family life, from finances to friendships to daily routines. Hearing it from the spouse's point of view fills in a side of the PA school story that applicants rarely think about until they are living it.

How does a family prepare for the move and lifestyle change?

When one partner goes back to school, the whole family signs up for it. For Kena's family, that meant relocating across the country, finding a new place to live, and Kena continuing to work as a teacher while Sean took on the full load of a demanding program. Big transitions like this work best when both partners talk openly about expectations before the change happens, not after.

The practical pieces matter, like budgeting for a season of reduced income and figuring out childcare and schools in a new city. But the emotional pieces matter just as much. Leaving behind a support network and starting over somewhere new is hard, and naming that out loud helps. Going in with realistic expectations and a willingness to adjust as you go makes the whole experience far more manageable for everyone, kids included.

How do you stay connected during a demanding program?

PA school is intense, and the time pressure can squeeze a marriage and family if you let it. Kena's positive outlook is a big part of how her family stays connected through it. The couples who do well tend to protect small pockets of intentional time together rather than waiting for a free weekend that may never come.

That might look like a shared meal, a quick walk, or simply checking in about how each person is really doing. It also means the studying partner being honest about what they can and cannot give right now, and the supporting partner extending grace during the hardest stretches. Kids notice the tone at home, so keeping things steady and positive helps them adjust too. None of this requires a perfect plan. It just requires showing up for each other consistently while the demands are high.
