Reapplying to PA School: How to Get Accepted
By: Savanna Perry, PA-C
If you have not received an interview or acceptance by late November or early December, it is wise to start preparing to reapply, even though there is still a chance you will hear back. Reapplying is increasingly normal as PA school gets more competitive. Your goal is to show admissions committees clear improvement since your last application, through a refreshed personal statement, more healthcare experience, stronger grades, and meaningful volunteering.

When should I start planning to reapply?
If you have not gotten an interview invite or acceptance by late November or early December, there is still a chance you will hear back this cycle, but it is wise to act as though you will need to reapply. Preparing early gives you a head start instead of scrambling later.
Here is the most important thing: do not give up. PA school is getting more competitive every year and harder to get into, so many people apply more than once before they are accepted. That is becoming completely normal, and it is not a reflection of your worth or your potential as a PA. Take an honest look at your application and reflect on any interviews you had to figure out what you could improve. A second set of eyes, whether from a mentor or a counseling session, can help you spot the gaps you are too close to see.
How do I make my application stronger as a reapplicant?
As a reapplicant, your whole job is to show the admissions committee that you have improved and kept working toward your goal since the first time you applied. A few areas to focus on:
Revise your personal statement. You do not have to rewrite the whole essay, but update it to reflect what you have accomplished this year and how it reaffirmed that you want this career.
Add more healthcare experience. If you have been in the same role for a long time, consider switching to a different job to broaden your exposure.
Look at your transcript. Repeat any questionable grades to show you can do better and to raise your GPA, and take any extra prerequisite courses your target programs recommend.
Volunteer. Find a cause you care about and give your time. Even non-medical volunteering looks good and will probably make you feel good too.
Small, steady improvements across these areas add up to a noticeably stronger application.
I have worked with so many applicants who were crushed after a first cycle did not go their way, and then got in the next year after making focused improvements. In our experience coaching reapplicants, the difference is almost always clear, specific growth, not just reapplying with the same file and hoping for a different outcome.
What if I get an interview as a reapplicant?
If you are offered an interview the second time around, that is a great sign, and you should lean into your growth. Take time to reflect on what you have learned over the past year and how it will make you a better classmate and future PA.
Admissions committees love to see self-awareness and resilience. Being able to say, here is what I identified as a weakness, here is what I did about it, and here is what I learned, is incredibly powerful. It turns a reapplication into a story of determination rather than a setback. Practice talking about your journey out loud so it comes across as confident and genuine, not rehearsed. Reapplying is hard, but plenty of practicing PAs got in on their second or third try, and their persistence is part of what makes them great providers.
Reapplying is increasingly common as the field gets more competitive, and many practicing PAs were accepted on their second or third try.
