Prepping for PA School Applications as a Sophomore

Plans will not always go the way you script them, and that is okay. In Ashley's sophomore year, a planned summer shadowing experience with a surgery PA got canceled, an EMT class she registered for was called off because too few people signed up, and winter break shadowing fell through when case numbers rose. Any one of those would feel discouraging, and all of them together can make you feel like you will never fulfill the requirements.

The key is to pivot rather than stall. When her shadowing got canceled, she found online programs instead, including a hospital seminar series and profession sessions through a pre-health club, where physicians presented real cases and walked through diagnosis and treatment. When the EMT class fell through, she used the freed-up time for other parts of the application. The lesson is to treat a canceled opportunity as a redirect, not a dead end, and to keep asking what else you can work on right now.

Your GPA is the foundation, so protect it. Ashley kept her studies the top priority all year and even took an online course over the summer specifically to boost her GPA, which paid off when she made the Dean's List. As a sophomore, this is the time to build strong study habits and to be strategic about how you stack your hard science prerequisites.

One practical tip is to plan your remaining semesters out in advance so you do not end up with too many demanding science courses at the same time. Her reasoning was smart: if she learns the formats now, then by the time she is invited to interview she can focus her energy on answering the specific school's questions instead of learning how the interview itself works. She also built a set of spreadsheets to stay organized: one logging her virtual hours from the summer, one tracking her grades by semester, one listing planned extracurriculars so she would not overcommit, and one mapping her future class schedules to balance the hard sciences. Starting these tracking systems early means that when application time comes, your hours, grades, and activities are already documented and easy to pull together. Even in a challenging season, hard work and determination open up opportunities to fulfill requirements and show programs you are ready.
