PA School Experience Webinar: PCE, HCE, Hours Q&A
By: Savanna Perry, PA-C
This post shares a podcast episode pulled from our January Experience webinar, where we answered live questions about the categories of hours you need for PA school: patient care experience (PCE), healthcare experience (HCE), shadowing, and volunteering. It's a practical Q&A for anyone trying to figure out which experiences count and how to log them. A free experience log is linked so you can start tracking your hours.
What does the PA school experience webinar cover?
This week's podcast episode is an experience deep dive, taken straight from our January Experience webinar. We explored patient care and healthcare experience, shadowing, volunteering, and the other categories of hours you need for PA school. There are so many great questions answered in this episode, because it came from a live Q&A where applicants asked exactly what was confusing them.
If you've ever stared at your hours and wondered which bucket a job falls into, or how much shadowing and volunteering you really need, this is the kind of conversation that clears it up. Instead of one polished lecture, you get real questions from real pre-PAs and practical answers you can apply to your own application. To follow along with everything, you can listen to the episode or watch the recording on YouTube.
How do I track my PCE, HCE, shadowing, and volunteering?
One of the most useful things you can do early is start logging your hours as you go, instead of scrambling to reconstruct them at application time. We put together a free experience log specifically for healthcare and shadowing hours, so you have one place to record dates, hours, supervisors, and the type of experience.
Keeping a running log makes your CASPA entries far easier later, and it helps you see at a glance where you might be light. Maybe you have plenty of patient care hours but very little shadowing, or lots of one specialty and no variety. A simple log surfaces those gaps while you still have time to fix them. Tracking as you go also means you won't forget a short volunteer stint or a shadowing day from a year ago that absolutely should count.
In our experience coaching applicants, the people who start an experience log early are the ones who breathe easy at application time. The ones who wait end up emailing old supervisors trying to confirm hours from two years ago. A simple running log is one of the lowest effort, highest payoff habits a pre-PA can build.
Where can I get more help with experience hours?
This webinar episode is one piece of a bigger set of free resources we've built for pre-PA applicants. The episode itself answers a wide range of experience questions, and the free experience log gives you a tool to act on what you learn.
If you want to keep going, there are other free resources worth grabbing, like a two week personal statement email course and a GPA calculator to check where your numbers land. We also point applicants to the Pre-PA Club Facebook group, where questions about experience and the rest of the application get answered every day. The big takeaway from the webinar is that experience categories trip up a lot of people, but once you understand what counts as patient care versus healthcare experience and start tracking it, the whole thing feels much more manageable.
One year of full time work is roughly 2,000 hours, which is a handy benchmark when you're estimating your totals.
