Interview Prep for Your PA School Interview

Invites arrive at unpredictable times, sometimes quickly after submission, so there's really no break between submitting your application and starting interview prep.

If an interview date collides with a prior commitment, your options vary by school. Some will offer another date; many can't, because interview spots are limited. Virtual interviews are the saving grace for travel conflicts since you can attend from anywhere. Worst case, you may have to decline an invitation, which is disappointing, but it's better to know the stakes upfront and keep your calendar interview-ready all season.

Expect a mix. Virtual interviews stuck around after 2020 because they're convenient and cheaper for everyone, but you do lose the chance to physically experience a campus and meet your potential classmates in the hallway.

The good news from candidates who've done both is that it's absolutely possible to connect with faculty and get a real feel for a program through a screen. If your interview is virtual, treat it just as seriously as an in-person one: test your tech, find a quiet room with a clean background, set your camera at eye level, and wear the same suit.

Four types show up across programs:

• Traditional: straightforward question-and-answer about you, the profession, and the program.

• Behavioral: how you've handled real situations and conflicts.

• Situational/ethical: scenario-based prompts, sometimes with role-play.

• MMI (Multiple Mini Interview): timed stations with varied scenarios emphasizing critical thinking.

Many programs also add a group activity (collaborating with other candidates on a scenario; participate actively, respect others' opinions, and demonstrate teamwork) and/or a short timed essay (responding to a question or analyzing an article; they're checking for concise, thoughtful writing, not literary genius).

Most people naturally speak for about a minute to a minute and a half per answer, and that's roughly the right zone. It's long enough to be substantive and short enough to stay focused.

Even in timed formats like MMIs, focus on complete, meaningful responses rather than watching the clock. Practice with a timer in mock interviews to calibrate your pace, and watch out for the two habits that hurt answers most: repetition and rambling past your point.

More waiting, and the timeline varies. Some schools decide within a couple of weeks; others wait until all interview days are done.

When the acceptance comes (hooray!), expect a deadline. You'll typically have around two weeks to respond and secure your seat with a deposit. Deposits range from about a hundred dollars to several thousand depending on the program, so be financially ready for that moment before it arrives.
