CASPA GPA Rules That Surprise Applicants (Less Stress Guide)

Every single grade from every course you've ever taken goes into your CASPA GPA. There's no averaging and no grade replacement. If you took Organic Chemistry three times and earned a C, B, then A, all three count. Your university may "replace" the old grade on your transcript, but CASPA never does.

The silver lining is that most programs pay attention to the highest grade and to upward trends. But the math is the math, and that's why so many applicants discover their CASPA GPA is lower than their transcript GPA, sometimes low enough to fall under a program's 3.0 minimum. CASPA calculates your GPAs only after you submit and your application is verified, and then it never recalculates again that cycle. This trips up applicants every single year.

Here's the classic mistake: you submit in June for early-deadline schools, finish summer courses with great grades, and assume later-deadline schools will see an improved GPA. They won't. New coursework added after verification doesn't change your calculated GPAs until you reapply in a NEW cycle. If a strong in-progress semester matters to your numbers, weigh whether waiting for those grades before submitting is worth the rolling-admissions tradeoff. And remember, some schools accept course-completion updates by email, while others strictly go by the application.

Most entered data (coursework, experiences, transcripts already on file) should carry over to the next cycle. Two things never do:

• Letters of recommendation: they must be requested and submitted fresh every cycle, electronically and directly from the writers.

• - Your personal statement: you'll re-enter it each cycle (and it should be updated anyway to show growth).

And please don't treat CASPA as the only home of your information. Keep your experience descriptions, essay, and details saved elsewhere, because resets and glitches happen.

New experiences go out to programs as updates, but whether a program looks is program-specific. The better move is to email the program's admissions contact directly with a short, polite update.
