Can You Go to PA School Straight from Undergrad? (Myth Busted)

The myth says you can't go to PA school straight from undergrad. Guest author Jada did exactly that: CNA certification in high school, PCE every summer and break, shadowing and volunteering throughout, prerequisites finished by junior year, and an application mindset of "if I don't get in, the gap year happens anyway." Gap years are great for some people, but they are not mandatory.

Is It Actually Possible to Skip the Gap Year?

Yes, it just requires compressing the usual timeline. Programs want hundreds to thousands of PCE hours, shadowing, volunteering, and finished prerequisites, and accumulating all of that DURING undergrad means starting early and using every break.

Jada's version: she knew at 14 she wanted to be a PA, earned her CNA in high school, planned her college schedule so prerequisites finished by junior year, worked every summer and break, and shadowed anyone who'd let her. That's eight years of runway she built on purpose, and it's what the straight-through path really requires.

Go in with a no-lose mindset: "If I don't get in, I simply wasn't ready, and the gap year happens naturally while I reapply." Applying junior year costs application fees and effort, but it doesn't cost you the gap-year option, which is still the automatic fallback.

That framing takes the desperation out of it, too, because you're taking a free early shot while your backup plan builds itself.

Her caution is worth quoting: people tend to defend whichever path THEY took as 'best.' Her challenge is to weigh your own pros and cons instead, because this is your education, not someone else's.

What Are the Real Advantages of Going Straight Through?

Jada found three real advantages:

Readiness without coasting. With hours, shadowing, grades, and strong LOR relationships already banked, another CNA year felt like coasting, so PA school was the growth move.

School mode. If you've been a student since age five, staying in the rhythm is easier than restarting it after years away. The transition into PA school's intensity is real either way, and momentum helps.

A longer career. Starting earlier means more years in a profession you love, and more years to eventually mentor the next generation, the way professors and mentors did for you.

And Jada is quick to add the other side: gap years are great for many people, offering deeper immersion in the field, more savings, and more life experience. Neither path is "best" on its own. One is just best FOR YOU.

Applying junior year is a free shot: if you get in, you saved a year, and if not, the gap year you'd have taken anyway starts on schedule, this time with feedback to act on.

What If People Say You're Too Young or Not Ready?

They're wrong, and the admissions committee already settled the question. If you were accepted, you were chosen from thousands of applicants for a reason. PA school classes contain students of all ages, and there is no "right" age to start.

And if an admissions decision pushes you into an unplanned gap year, take it as extra time: learn more, bank more hours, and arrive even more prepared to crush it. Either way, the people doubting you don't get a say in your future.

Time to kill some myths about this profession.

There's a lot of bad information floating around about what PAs do and what getting here takes, and some of it comes from people who should know better. So I'm going through the ones I hear most and telling you what's actually true.

"PA school is easier than med school." No. It's shorter. Those are not the same thing, and the compression is exactly what makes it brutal.

"PAs can switch specialties whenever they want." There is real flexibility here, more than most professions, but it isn't unlimited and it gets harder the longer you're in one field.

I also get into what patients actually think about seeing a PA, which is usually much less dramatic than students fear, and whether PAs really operate.
