Nikki applied three separate cycles, sending out nine to twelve applications each time, with a 3.3 overall GPA and a 3.0 science GPA. On the third attempt she interviewed at her top choice, East Carolina University, and heard back a week later that she was in. She brought roughly 5,600 PCE hours from two years as an EMT and eight months as an ED tech, plus more than 500 shadowing hours — one of the highest totals we've featured.

In Our Experience

In our experience at The PA Platform, a 3.0 science GPA is the hardest number on any application to overcome, because many programs screen on it before a human ever reads your file. That's the honest explanation for why Nikki needed three cycles rather than one. What she did in the meantime is the right response: she kept working. Two years as an EMT and eight months as an ED tech gave her roughly 5,600 hours of genuine emergency patient care, and her 500+ shadowing hours across emergency medicine, family medicine, orthopedic trauma, and pediatrics is far beyond typical. Three of her four letters came from physicians and a PA who had watched her work. Applying to nine to twelve programs per cycle was the correct strategy for her numbers.

I read the entire Physician Assistant School interview guide by Savanna Perry in preparation. This book could not have been more helpful in how it helps you dissect the question and better formulate strong answers.

Any other advice for other pre-PA students?

Don't give up! In due season you will get your chance if you work hard.

CLOSING

Three cycles and somewhere between 27 and 36 applications later, Nikki got into her first-choice program. Her advice is four words of encouragement, but her application is a detailed argument: when your GPA is working against you, the answer is volume and depth of real clinical experience, shadowing broad enough to know the profession from several angles, and letters from people who have actually watched you care for patients.
