Why PA? I have always been fascinated by medicine and considered many different careers in healthcare. I liked how flexible the PA profession was in terms of specialty and education. I didn't have to worry about being placed in a residency far from my support system if I went into medical school and I enjoyed the PA's role in the collaborative healthcare team. I also love how new the profession is and how much advocacy goes into making this career great.

How many programs did you apply to? 9

How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? 6 interview invitations (1 I turned down) 4 acceptances (1 from a waitlist) 2 waitlists (1 from a program not doing interviews) 2 rejections

Where will you be attending? Thomas Jefferson University-Center City

Anything you found interesting about interviews? How nice most of the interviewers are! Most of my interviews were more conversational and less formal than I imagined. This allowed me to confidently answer questions. Remember you were invited to interview for a reason! These people want to see you succeed.

Were there any helpful resources (books, websites, webinars, etc) you used to get through prerequisites courses, the application or interview process? The PA Platform interview guide, State Pre-PA conferences, and The Pre-PA Club Facebook page

Any advice for other pre-PA students? Take your time and stop comparing so much! A little comparison is healthy to be the best applicant but don't let it consume you; everyone has different strengths.

Accepted: Emma - Thomas Jefferson University Center City

Undergraduate education: Grand Valley State University (GVSU) in Michigan

Overall GPA: I graduated GVSU with a 3.815 but on CASPA it calculated my overall GPA as a 3.83.

Science GPA: 3.76

GRE: 290

PA-CAT: N/A

Total PCE hours: I gained PCE as a CNA in a nursing home on my summers off from college. Once I graduated I became an uncertified Medical Assistant. I ended up having about 700-800 when I applied but in May but I continuously updated it and had about 1000 hours in September.

Total HCE hours: All of my HCE came from my medical assistant job because I did do some pre-auths for scans and prepared charts. I had about 100 hours.

Shadowing hours: I had 42 hours in person shadowing. I shadowed 2 cardiovascular PA's and 1 pediatric orthopedic PA! I did cold calls to local hospitals and offices asking to shadow. During COVID-19 I did 3 virtual shadowing hours that I found though the @pre_pa.pals on Instagram.

Volunteer hours: I had about 60 hours of volunteering. During school I volunteered the local food pantry where I helped create food baskets for those in need. I also helped with Christmas donations and created back to school backpacks. In the summers when I was back home, I volunteered at my local animal shelter helping with the cats. I was also a volunteer leader of a beach wide cleanup at Lake Michigan in my hometown. We picked up and collected over 200 pieces of trash on the beach!

Why PA? I knew I wanted to go into medicine but I was really sure what I wanted to do. I first heard about the PA profession when I talked to the president of the pre-PA club at GVSU and I was interested in learning more about it so I shadowed a cardiovascular PA. After shadowing her, I knew this was the profession for me! I loved the autonomy she had but also the relationship she had with the physician she worked with! I also loved the relationships that she had with her patients and how much they really trusted her as their provider. After shadowing her, I felt a sense of purpose that I have never felt before after shadowing other professions.

How many programs did you apply to? My first cycle I applied to 6 to dip my toes in since I know CASPA can be daunting. I got 1 interview but was sadly rejected. This cycle I applied to 15 school.

How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? I got 5 interview invites. I received 1 rejection, 1 acceptance and 3 waitlists. I actually just got taken off the waitlist to my top choice school so that's where I will be attending!

Where will you be attending? I will be attending Thomas Jefferson University (Center City)

Anything you found interesting about interviews? Some of my interviewers really connected with me with some of my answers! I was really surprised. At the end of one of my interviews the interviewer told me that I would make a really great PA one day because she felt like I was really passionate and could tell I had the empathy needed to take care of my patients.

Were there any helpful resources (books, websites, webinars, etc) you used to get through prerequisites courses, the application or interview process? I used The PA Platform's Interview book by Savanna Perry. It was really helpful and most questions that I got asked during my interviews where questions in the book. I also used the mock interview from The PA platform as well. I interviewed with both Peter and Allison and I honesty don't think I would have done so well on my interview with out them! The really helped hone my interviewing skills and made me feel more comfortable in my abilities!

Any advice for other pre-PA students? I would tell pre-PA students to enjoy there time in undergrad and make sure to do well in there studies. If you ever feel like you're struggling, make sure to go to the professor or sign up for tutoring. I signed up for tutoring for all my hard classes like organic chemistry (even before they started) since I knew I might struggle with them and it helped immensely. Also, I would advise pre-PA students to apply even if they feel like some of their stats are low. As long as you meet the minimum requirements for a school, you can still apply and receive an interview invite!

Why PA? My mom was really sick when I was young and so an early exposure got me very interested in medicine. Also in some way I wanted to take care of others the same way my mom was taken care of. I knew I wanted to be a PA specifically when I met with one and everything they were describing was exactly what I wanted out a career.

How many programs did you apply to? 12

How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? I got four interview offers and went to two of them. I only interviewed at 2 because I got accepted into my top one. The other interview I got I got a waitlist offer. For the program I got accepted I started out on the interview waitlist and than was on the program waitlist before being accepted. Don’t let a waitlist email scare you!

Where will you be attending? University of South Dakota

Anything you found interesting about interviews? They were actually pretty fun and taking with other applicants made the process not seem so scary! I knew I wanted to go to USD the minute I talked to current students during the interviews. I also found it surprising how everyone was so welcoming and the interviews felt more like a conversation!

Were there any helpful resources (books, websites, webinars, etc) you used to get through prerequisites courses, the application or interview process? The PA interview guide from the platform really helped me. It exposed me to possible questions and helped me feel better prepared.

Any advice for other pre-PA students? Take a deep breathe! The process can be scary but it can also be fun! I would also recommend finding a PA to shadow sooner rather than later because schools like to see that you have a good understanding of the role of a PA.

How many programs did you apply to? 3

How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? I interviewed with 2 programs. Michigan state and Trine University. I got accepted into Trine and declined from Michigan State.

Why PA? I found my interest in medicine during middle school when I realized it might be a little bit odd that I found myself constantly reading books about people who were sick and then I would go home and research the disease that they had because I needed to know more about it. I am a first generation college student and I originally set my sights on becoming a doctor because with my interest in medicine and affinity for school that is what made sense to me. However, once I started to really think about my life and my career in medicine I asked myself what kind of provider I wanted to be. I want to be someone that works with underserved communities by providing compassionate and comprehensive healthcare in a variety of setting. After doing more research and learning about the PA profession, I realized how much the profession resonated with me. I had been doubting my happiness with a career as a doctor and when I read about being a PA I just knew that was what I was meant to do.

How many programs did you apply to? 9

How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? I had 7 interviews that resulted in 6 acceptances and 1 waitlist.

Where will you be attending? UW-Madison

Anything you found interesting about interviews? I felt that in all of my interviews the interviewers really just wanted to get to know who I am better. I felt that it was my chance to bring life into my application and I really enjoyed the interview process.

Any advice for other pre-PA students? Apply smart and be willing to do more! The process is expensive, so make sure you are meeting all of the pre reqs for the schools you apply for- and take a look at their accepted applicants stats if they are available. Also- don’t be afraid to take the GRE, PA-CAT, CASPER, if you are able to and write those extra essays! A lot more people will apply to the schools with no additional requirements so if you want to be an applicant in a smaller pool go above and beyond!

He actually ended up being a great resource and I got to sit in on one of his lectures at a local PA school. I also got to attend a medical sales rep dinner which was so fun.

Volunteer hours: 20 hours. Helped teach kids how to read.

Why PA? I love how the PA profession is based in making healthcare more accessible. I am also very interested in pursuing emergency medicine so I like how if I become burnt out I can still take the skills I learned there to another specialty that could utilize them.

How many programs did you apply to? About 12 maybe 14

How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? 8 interview invites, 7 interviews attended, 5 acceptances, and 2 waitlists.

Where will you be attending? PACE University

Anything you found interesting about interviews? I was honestly surprised at how relaxed they were. Maybe it has to do with where I applied, but all my interviewers were very kind and laid back. They all seemed to just want to get to know me. There were a lot of laughs which I was not expecting.

Were there any helpful resources (books, websites, webinars, etc) you used to get through prerequisites courses, the application or interview process? I used a couple PA interview prep books for interviews (Physician Assistant Interview Guide and How to “Ace” the Physician Assistant School Interview) and I did a mock interview with The PA Life. A kinda weird way I prepared for interviews was by talking out my answers in my car while commuting. I felt more comfortable in my car knowing no one else could hear me and anyone that saw me probably thought I was talking on the phone. I also relied heavily on the Pre Physician Assistant subreddit. I also used the pre PA Facebook page too.

Any advice for other pre-PA students? Don’t compare yourself to others! That was the absolute thief of my joy over the summer while I was waiting to hear back. I didn’t hear back about an interview until the end of August and I had applied in May. All of my friends got accepted before I did and I doubted myself a lot through that process. I wish I enjoyed my summer more and spent less time stalking my email.

Total PCE hours: I had 3,100 PCE hours. I gained my experience working as a Speech Language Pathologist in Brazil, and working as an Ophthalmic Assistant in the U.S.

Total HCE hours: Only 35 hours working in the Ophthalmic clinic’s call center triaging patients according to their chief of complaint. Also, assisting patients with scheduling, rescheduling and canceling appointments.

Shadowing hours: I had 96 in-person shadowing hours. I shadowed three PAs in three different specialties (dermatology, pediatrics, and general surgery.) I also had 18 hours of virtual shadowing from the virtual shadowing platform.

Volunteer hours: I had 161 volunteer hours. I did different types of volunteerism. For a period of time I visited women with terminal cancer in a hospital. I took care of children with special needs, so their parents could go on a date. I practiced Portuguese with Americans who were learning Portuguese as a second language. I volunteered in my kids’ schools. And I volunteered in kids’ Summer camps.

Why PA? My desire to help people heal as a whole instead of just a small part of them, which I used to do as a SLP, led me to the PA profession. Learning about the higher level of care PAs are able to provide and their importance to underserved communities made this career the right fit for me. As a Brazilian, I know how much underserved areas suffer from a lack of medical care, and my main desire is to help these communities with medical care as much as I can.

How many programs did you apply to? 14

How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? I interviewed with 5 programs. I had one rejection (University of New Mexico). Two waitlists ( St. Francis University, Loretto - PA and University of the Pacific, Sacramento - CA. I was later pulled off from the UOP waiting list). And I had 2 acceptances (UTHSC, Memphis - TN and University of Utah, SLC campus)

Where will you be attending? University of Utah

Anything you found interesting about interviews? I found surprising that some interviewers really read your PS in details while others don’t. I learned that you have to be well prepared to answer not only specific questions about your PS, but also to highlight your PS for those interviewers who haven’t asked anything about it. In my opinion, If they didn’t ask anything about your PS, you should assume that they don’t know much about it.

Were there any helpful resources (books, websites, webinars, etc) you used to get through prerequisites courses, the application or interview process? The pre-PA club Facebook group and PA platform were essential to help me to go through all the steps from prerequisites to interview day. I used “My PA resource” for PS editing and for a Mock interview. I also bought the Interview guide book and the online course.

Any advice for other pre-PA students? What I learned about this process. - Apply to schools that you think you can be a good fit. More important than the school’s requirements is the school’s mission. Schools are looking for applicants that will be a good fit to their program. - Apply to as many schools as you can afford, even if you think you don’t have a good chance. Sometimes the schools that you think that will not send you an interview invite are the ones that will. - Take the time to prepare your personal statement. It is true guys! It is the personal statement that will give you an interview. I used “My PA resource” service to review my first draft and it was essential to guide me to the right direction. After my 6th draft, I got “the one” personal statement. - Prepare for the interviews. I read the book from Savanna Perry, did her prep course and also did a mock interview. I kept practicing the questions as much as I could. I also tried to learn as much as possible from each school and faculty that I was going to have an interview. - Tell your story, be sincere, show your passion and determination in becoming a PA. - If you got a rejection it does not mean that you are a failure. It can be so many factors. It is okay to feel sad and discouraged for a little while, but do not give up. Keep preparing for the next interview. It only takes one! - And last, but not least. If you get waitlisted do not lose hope. You still have a chance to be called. I am a non-traditional applicant, born and raised in Brazil, and mom of two little girls. After nine years getting ready to apply, I am finally GOING TO BE A PA! And so are you! Like the fable of The Tortoise and the Hare. Do not compare yourself, keep your pace, and you will get to the finish line.

Why PA? Versatility. I have many interests and the ability of the PA to work in an OR one day and a family practice clinic the next is exciting. In an era of burnout and exhaustion, I think the ability to change specialties on a whim will lead to a longer, happier, more fulfilling career.

How many programs did you apply to? 7

How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? 4 interviews; 3 waitlists; 1 acceptance (at my top choice!)

Where will you be attending? University of Oklahoma Health Science Center in Oklahoma City

Anything you found interesting about interviews? They are actually very low stress. At this point in the application process, they know you want to be a PA. They know your stats and your story. The faculty really just wants to put a name to a face and a voice.

Were there any helpful resources (books, websites, webinars, etc) you used to get through prerequisites courses, the application or interview process? I leaned heavily on office hours for pre-reqs (I’ve learned the most annoying students tend to have the most success). For the application, I just took my time and was thorough. For the interviews, I used Savanna Perry’s interview guide which helped ease my nerves.

Any advice for other pre-PA students? If you really want it, you will get there. It is a long, gauntlet of a process, but everyone has to go through it - you are not alone.

How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? 2- waitlisted at one and offered a seat at the other.

Anything you found interesting about interviews? They were both SO different. One was a chill conversation with no formal questions and the other was a three part interview and incorporated very formal interview aspects.

Were there any helpful resources (books, websites, webinars, etc) you used to get through prerequisites courses, the application or interview process? Following pre-pa accounts on instagram gave me some good things to think about along the way.

Any advice for other pre-PA students? Do everything to the best you can and don’t try to rush through things! An extra year with better grades or more experience is worth it in my opinion.

Total PCE hours: 2000 when I submitted. I got my EMT license and used that to work as an MA in an urgent care and at an OBGYN practice.

Total HCE hours: I did not end up with any HCE experience. I instead focused on PCE, research, and volunteer hours.

Shadowing hours: I shadowed an anesthesiologist and a bariatric PA who were family friends during summers at home, and I sent out cold emails to physicians at my university’s hospital to connect and shadowed through our pre-med organization. I additionally did virtual shadowing during the pandemic with multiple PAs through instagram virtual shadowing accounts. Once I solidified a job working with NPs and PAs, I asked to stick around outside of my shift and shadowed my providers I worked with!

Volunteer hours: 400. I volunteered for philanthropic events and initiatives through my sorority, and I attended alternative spring breaks that spent the whole week of spring break assisting different communities around the US by teaching in lower income schools or cleaning up communities. ASB is one of the best ways to get volunteer hours because it allows for a full week of volunteering without worrying about it conflicting with study time. You also grow a lot because of the way you are solely focused on the experience and not the other 100 things on your to do list.

Anything you found interesting about interviews? The questions asked in all of my interviews were in such a random and unnatural order! They saved the casual “intro” until the end of the interview and started with the tough ones forcing me to take a stance on a statement or share the hardest thing I had persevered through. Be prepared to start and answer in any order! Also, do not be discouraged or concerned if you do not use your whole interview time. If you have elaborated and feel sure about your answer, stop talking!

Were there any helpful resources (books, websites, webinars, etc) you used to get through prerequisites courses, the application or interview process? I used the PA Platform’s interview guide and did two mock interviews!

Any advice for other pre-PA students? Write everything down and plan ahead! While it seems daunting at first, once I spent the time to break down what I needed to accomplish each semester to be ready to apply to PA programs, I accomplished my goal successfully with lesser stress!

Why PA? I chose to become a PA because I fell in love with the career. I loved the idea of patient care that focuses on forming true connections with patients and values good patient outcomes. I came from a very rural area in Oklahoma where access to medical care was severely lacking. I saw the PA profession as an opportunity to fill the gaps that are missing in the states healthcare system.

How many programs did you apply to? I applied to the same 3 programs each time I applied, all within my home state of Oklahoma.

How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? I was very blessed to have interviewed with all 3 programs I applied to. My second time applying I received an acceptance to ALL 3 programs!

Where will you be attending? I will be attending the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine Physician Assistant program in Tulsa Oklahoma.

Anything you found interesting about interviews? I was surprised at how well the conversations flowed the second time around. I can remember being very nervous my first time interviewing, the set up being on zoom didn’t ease my nerves. This time, two of my interviews were in person and only one was over zoom. I felt incredibly confident in person and they made me feel very comfortable and encouraged through the process!!

Were there any helpful resources (books, websites, webinars, etc) you used to get through prerequisites courses, the application or interview process? Something that I believe helped me through undergrad is that I knew very early on I wanted to pursue PA as a career path. This opened the conversation with my advisors to plan which classes I needed to take to ensure completion of prerequisites. Not only that, but they encouraged me through the process and helped me decide which HCE I could do that would suit me best. To help me prepare for interviews, I used Savannah Perry’s book titled Physician Assistant School Interview Guide. This was incredibly helpful as it challenged me to really think through some commonly asked questions ahead of time so I wouldn’t be taken off guard. It was also a very encouraging book!

Any advice for other pre-PA students? My advice to current pre-PA students is just keep chipping away at it. You WILL become a PA one day. You WILL reach this dream. You owe it to yourself and your future patients to keep working hard!

Why PA? I knew from a young age that I wanted to work in the medical field, saw a PA as a teenager at my local pediatrician office and loved the time and education he gave my family. I knew that I wanted to interact with my patients in the same manner. I’m also excited to work with my future class mates as a team rather than compete with them for a residency.

How many programs did you apply to? 6

How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? I was invited to interview during the first round of applications, but wasn’t accepted because of a lack of hands-on patient care hours, so of course gaining those was my next step. So far my current program, South College - Nashville, is my only interview invitation and acceptance.

Where will you be attending? South College - Nashville

Anything you found interesting about interviews? No questions were “off the wall” nor tricky. I had prepared using Savannah’s interview guide, and all questions asked were related to me and my preparation for PA school.

Were there any helpful resources (books, websites, webinars, etc) you used to get through prerequisites courses, the application or interview process? My Pre-PA advisor at Georgia Southern, Pre-PA Club, Savannah’s interview guide, fellow applicant students

Any advice for other pre-PA students? Applications, interviews, and the waiting period is tough, and be prepared for a “no” because of the sheer competitiveness of the process. If told “no,” regroup and see how you can improve your application for next time. If it is your dream, keep trying!

Accepted: Becca - Touro University Nevada

Undergraduate education: University of Wisconsin-Madison

Overall GPA: 3.53

GRE: 307

Total PCE hours: 4303 (but around 3500 at time of submission); I worked as a CNA in LTC for 2 years and then as a float CNA in a hospital for 3. I loved being a float CNA because I got exposure to tons of different units/specialties and learned a lot from the various healthcare professionals I saw and worked with!

Volunteer hours: 518; I did a variety of things like volunteer in a local food pantry, help out my health occupation student org with various events, lead Greek life recruitment, etc.

How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? 1- was initially waitlisted and got accepted a month later!

Where will you be attending? Touro University Nevada

Anything you found interesting about interviews? The 1:1/MMI style was surprisingly easy! Just be yourself and treat it as a normal conversation, it was actually more fun than I expected! The group interview was the most nerve wracking for me. My advice would be to brainstorm different experiences you’ve had in patient care that you can apply to various prompts/potential questions. Don’t let other people’s responses in a group setting intimidate you! Focus on yourself, thinking through your own answers, and just breathe.

Were there any helpful resources (books, websites, webinars, etc) you used to get through prerequisites courses, the application or interview process? Savanna’s Pre-PA Club podcast was great for interview prep when I was burnt out from practicing questions out loud! I also looked up mock interviews on YouTube and watched those to get an idea of what could be asked.

Any advice for other pre-PA students? Don’t compare yourself to others. I was not confident that I would get in compared to my peers at first, but you really don’t need straight As and a million PCE hours. Work on areas of your application to make yourself stand out, such as diverse PCE or volunteer experiences. I truly think I was accepted by finding a program that looked at my application holistically and considered my unique experiences. Also, truly have hope that things will work out, because it’s true what they say; all it takes is one!

Why PA? I love that PAs can treat patients in many specialities. I believe PAs are an extension of healthcare that is desperately needed now more than ever. Schooling is shorter but there are more requirements to get into school. This appealed to me because I’m ready to get out there and start impacting patients lives. I love the teamwork aspect of the profession and having a physician to consult with if you don’t know about a certain disease or diagnosis. PAs are the glue of healthcare!

How many programs did you apply to? 12

How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? I interviewed for one school my first cycle and was rejected. Second cycle was much more successful. I interviewed at the same school and was waitlisted but received two other interviews, one in which was a rejection. I was waitlisted at my current school and then accepted one month before the start! Thankfully they did not require the GRE

Where will you be attending? Christian Brothers University in Memphis TN

Anything you found interesting about interviews? Their interview was very relaxed. I was surprised at how friendly the faculty were and it helped with the nerves!

Were there any helpful resources (books, websites, webinars, etc) you used to get through prerequisites courses, the application or interview process? Savanah Perry’s books are incredibly helpful, especially the questions at the end of the interview book. Practice your responses out loud! Practice with a family member or friend. PA Platform also really helped me navigate the personal statement and read other applicant stories.

Any advice for other pre-PA students? Do not give up. If this is what you want, you cannot take no for an answer. Look at what you can improve on. Focus on what you can change and do just that. Get more experience in a different area. Retake some courses. Retake your GRE. Take every opportunity you have to improve especially during covid. More importantly, do not compare your stats to others. I am on the lower end of the applicant scale, but I wasn’t going to let that keep me from living my dream. I worked harder as a CNA to show my dedication and kept focused on my goal: PA-S.

Why PA? Through working with 5 PAs every day and observing the different roles of a healthcare team, I found that PAs are devoted to developing relationships with their patients in addition to wholeheartedly observing and meeting their needs. This dedication sets them apart and instilled in me the ultimate goal to improve the health of those who are vulnerable and medically underserved. Additionally, lateral mobility within the profession is a huge asset to me, as I am interested in several specialties and would have a hard time narrowing it down to only one to work in forever!

How many programs did you apply to? First cycle-22; Second cycle-15

How many programs did you interview with and what were the outcomes? First cycle, I received no interviews. Second cycle, I interviewed with 3 programs, was put on the waitlist at 2 programs, and accepted into one program and accepted off the waitlist at another program.

Where will you be attending? Wake Forest University

Anything you found surprising about interviews? For the most part, interviewers truly want to know what makes you you! The paper version of you is what got the interview... show your personality and do not be afraid to talk! It is okay to tell endearing anecdotes and smile or laugh when appropriate. Just be yourself!

Were there any helpful resources (books, websites, apps, etc…) My PA Resource for personal statement editing + the Pre-PA Facebook page! I was very overwhelmed writing my personal statement and felt as if i could not get all of my ideas across. My PA resource really helped me figure out how best to say what I was trying to portray in my essays by asking posing questions and giving very beneficial advice. Additionally, the pre-PA Facebook page is such a good resource for not feeling like you are alone in the pre-PA journey!

Any other advice for Pre-PA students? Do not be afraid to ask for feedback on your application!!! A lot of schools see that as you showing dedication to getting into PA school and contributing to the profession. And if you seek advice, take it. The best thing I did was retake classes and start a new job, even though it was hectic at the time, it was worth it when I got my acceptance call!
